ChangeALife’s Uganda partner: GTI – Grassroots Transformation Initiative Uganda
Although Uganda in recent years showed highest rates of poverty reduction, the country remains among the poorest in the world. Poverty affects socio-economic, education, health and other aspects of development. This is coupled by over 22 years of civil wars that dumped people in Internally Displaced Persons Camps.
Many have left the camps and have to overcome significant life challenges. These include high rates of HIV/AIDS prevalence that tripled because of the commercial sex activities in the camps, alcohol abuse, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders and extreme poverty.
Rural communities are disproportionately affected by the country’s opportunities and alarming school dropout rates, extreme vulnerability, mysterious diseases including nodding disease, poor health service delivery among others.
GTI Uganda’s existence is important for local Economic Empowerment, Health, And Education Transformation. GTI Uganda believes that involving grassroots communities – children and families – in transformation propels holistic development and improves the energy, cohesion, creativity and decision making towards development.
We emphasize the education of girls who have been deprived of that opportunity because of cultural views and oppression by parents to marry them off at an early age.
